The internet is the perfect place to start looking for storage and helping self storage customers be more efficient. However, the process can be more challenging than just typing a search term in your internet explorer and calling the first search result that pops up. The fact is, for many of us, there can be over 10 self storage facilities in your local town making it difficult to make the right decision.
The good news is that you found us at LookingforStorage.com and we are going to give you some tips on how to use the internet to find yourself a great self storage facility and get you the best deal!
Self Storage Companies and Search Engine Optimization
The first concept you should keep in mind is that self storage companies may not be very good at search engine optimization. The best storage facility may not be the first one that shows up in the search results. This is an important point because most internet users (60%) usually click on the first search result and do not bother to scroll down the page (over 70% never scroll beyond what originally pops up on their screen). With these types of statistics, it would seem very important for a self storage company to have high internet search results, and if they do not, this could imply that they are not professional and should be avoided.
The Most Common Self Storage Search Terms
We are going to begin our search for self storage with the intent to find 3 storage facilities that we will use to compete with each other. One of the “big three” search engines is the best place to start – Google has over 70% of search engine market share, with Yahoo and Bing at 15% each. Start your search with the most common search terms to find a local self storage company, which are typically “storage” or “self storage” followed by the local City Name (or zip code if the city is geographically large). Self storage is a local business and when the terms above are typed in the search engines produce well organized results that even have maps showing you where facilities are located.
The first search result you will see are from paid advertisements – called Pay Per Click Advertisements. This is how the Search Engines Make all of their money, every time you click on the ad, the advertiser is charged a fee!
Internet search statistics show that 60% of clicks occur in the top search result. Professional Self Storage companies know these statistics, and will pay top dollar to get in the number one spot. If you are going to click on one of these ads (which most people do) just make sure that the advertisement is from a local company so that you are not wasting your time (sometimes national companies will place ads there for “Brand Awareness” purposes and not be physically located in your area).
The second area of the search results are usually in the form of what is called a Local Listing. These search results come in the form of a list, displaying the name of the company and some form of user review rating. This is a good spot to check user reviews about the local business. We all know that reviews can be faked, but, in recent years, the search engines have done a much better job at policing the review process eliminating false reviews. We strongly suggest that you take the time to read reviews here, they tell a good story.
The remaining areas of the search results display individual company websites. It is a good idea to take a look at that top two or three. Although the search results displayed here are “free”, most companies listed here have engaged the services of a Search Engine Optimization firm that can help them achieve placement on page one of the search results.
